Ado was born on October 24, 2002, in Tokyo, Japan. By age 12, she became interested in music after accessing Niconico, a Japanese video-sharing site, on her Nintendo 3DS. The small screen became her window into a world of musicians who sang covers without showing their faces, a hallmark of the utaite subculture. Utaite refers to amateur singers who upload covers of songs, especially Vocaloid tracks, to websites like Niconico and YouTube. These artists often conceal their identities, sometimes using animated avatars or illustrations instead of personal photos.
On January 10, 2017, Ado uploaded her first cover, "Kimi no Taion," onto Niconico, marking her debut as an utaite. To record, she soundproofed her closet by buying material online and using the tight space as a makeshift studio. This do-it-yourself approach is common among utaite singers, who frequently work from home studios and rely on digital communities for feedback and collaboration.
In December 2019, Ado featured in Kujira's digital single "Kinmokusei," which was released on December 23. A few months later, on March 29, 2020, Jon-Yakitory released "Shikabanēze," with Ado as the featured vocalist. Both tracks were published as digital singles, showcasing Ado’s early reputation as a vocalist within the online music scene. In May 2020, Ado contributed to the Pony Canyon compilation "Palette4," recording two songs: "Call Boy" by Syudou and "Taema Naku Ai iro" by Shishi Shishi.
On October 15, 2020, Ado announced her official debut on the Virgin Music sublabel of Universal Music Japan. Just one week later, on October 23, she released her first single, "Usseewa," which was written by Vocaloid producer Syudou. The music video for "Usseewa" reached five million views on YouTube by November 14, 2020. Within two months, on December 10, "Usseewa" reached the number one spot on Spotify Viral 50 Japan. On December 24, Ado released her second single, "Readymade," a digital-only release written by Surii, another Vocaloid producer.
By January 23, 2021, "Usseewa" had reached forty million views on YouTube. On February 3, 2021, it topped both the Oricon Digital Singles Chart and the Oricon Streaming Chart. On February 14, she released her third digital single, "Gira Gira," written by teniwoha, a Vocaloid producer. Four days later, her YouTube subscriber count surpassed one million. On March 15, "Usseewa" hit number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100. The music video achieved one hundred million YouTube views on March 20, just 148 days after release. By March 29, the song had reached one hundred million streams on Billboard Japan’s Streaming Songs chart, a feat achieved in only seventeen weeks—making Ado the youngest solo artist in history to reach that milestone, and the sixth fastest overall.
On April 27, 2021, Ado released her fourth single, "Odo," which was featured in an NHK show about Vocaloid producers. On June 11, 2021, YouTube named her "Artist on the Rise," making her the second Japanese female artist to receive the honor. On June 14, she released her fifth single, "Yoru no Pierrot." "Aitakute," her sixth single, was released on August 12.
In October 2021, Ado announced her debut studio album "Kyōgen." Released on January 26, 2022, it sold over 140,000 physical copies in Japan in its first week. This achievement made her the first female Japanese artist since Superfly’s 2008 debut album to surpass that sales mark in a week. The album debuted at number one on both the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart and the Oricon Albums chart. Ado became the first female artist to have a debut album debut at number one on these charts since Miwa’s "Guitarissimo" in 2011.
On June 8, 2022, Ado was revealed as the singing voice of the character Uta in the animated film "One Piece Film: Red." Kaori Nazuka provided the non-singing voice for Uta. That same day, Ado released "New Genesis," the film’s image song. "New Genesis" reached number one on the Japan Hot 100 and number 20 on the Billboard Global 200. On Apple Music, the song became the first Japanese song to top the Global Top 100 chart. Two weeks after "New Genesis," she released "I'm Invincible," which climbed to number two on the Japan Hot 100 and number three on the Oricon Combined Singles chart.
In August 2022, Ado released the soundtrack album "Uta's Songs: One Piece Film Red." On Japanese charts, Ado became the first artist to hold the top three spots on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 with "New Genesis," "I'm Invincible," and "Backlight." She later broke her own record by having five songs from the album in the top five of the Japan Hot 100. On the Oricon charts, she was the first artist in Oricon’s history to have five songs simultaneously in the top five of the Streaming chart. Following this surge, Ado signed with Geffen Records for worldwide album distribution.
From December 2022 to January 2023, Ado conducted her first tour in Japan, called "Mirage." From June to September 2023, she toured again, this time with the "Mars" tour, performing fourteen shows in eleven locations across Japan. On August 3, 2023, Ado was featured on the Japanese version of "Unforgiven" by Le Sserafim and Nile Rodgers. In September 2023, she released the single "Show," commissioned by Universal Studios Japan for their Halloween Horror Nights. "Show" became her third number-one single.
In October 2023, Ado released "Kura Kura," used as the opening theme for the second season of the anime "Spy × Family." She announced her first world tour, "Wish," on her twenty-first birthday, with the tour running from February to April 2024. In December 2023, Ado released her first "utattemita" album—a collection of cover songs—titled "Ado's Utattemita Album." The album featured covers of Ringo Sheena’s "Tsumi to Batsu," PinocchioP’s "God-ish," Akina Nakamori’s "Kazari ja Nai no yo Namida wa," and TK’s "Unravel." The album peaked at number two on the Oricon Albums chart and number one on the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart.
On April 27 and 28, 2024, Ado held two solo live performances titled "Shinzou" at Japan National Stadium, becoming the first solo female artist to headline the venue. On June 26, 2024, the idol group Phantom Siita, produced by Ado, debuted with the single "Otomodachi." In July 2024, Ado released her second studio album, "Zanmu," which was preceded by fourteen singles and debuted at number one on both the Oricon and Billboard Japan charts. "Zanmu" became her fourth consecutive number-one album on the Japan Hot Albums chart and her second number-one album on the Oricon Albums chart.
In October 2024, Ado announced her second world tour, the "Hibana World Tour," scheduled from April to August 2025 across multiple continents. The tour drew more than 500,000 attendees across 33 cities worldwide and was credited as the largest global tour by a Japanese artist to date. On December 16, 2024, Imagine Dragons released a remix of their song "Take Me to the Beach" featuring Ado.
In February 2025, it was announced that Ado would participate in the tribute compilation "Meikyo: Tribute to Akina Nakamori," covering Nakamori’s 1984 single "Jukkai (1984)." Around this time, Ado was also appointed as a brand ambassador for Georgia Coffee, with her song "Bouquet for Me" chosen as the commercial’s theme song. She narrated the commercial as well.
In April 2025, Ado released her first greatest hits album, "Ado’s Best Adobum." In July 2025, Spotify reported Ado as the most-streamed Japanese artist outside Japan in their mid-year rankings, with almost 80% of her streams coming from international listeners. This ended a four-year streak held by Yoasobi in that category.
On July 10, 2025, Ado announced her first dome tour, "Yodaka," to celebrate her fifth debut anniversary, with scheduled shows in major Japanese cities like Tokyo and Osaka. On July 28, she announced that she would provide the theme song for "The Silent Service: The Great Sea Battle of the Arctic Ocean," titled "The Story of the Wind and I," with lyrics by Hiroji Miyamoto and arrangement by Mafumafu. In August 2025, Ado’s staff revealed she would provide the theme song for a reboot of the "Cat’s Eye" net animation, writing "Magic" with lyrics and music by Vocaloid producer Tsumiki. She would also sing the ending theme, a cover of Anri’s "Cat’s Eye," which was originally the opening theme for the 1983 anime.
In January 2026, Ado transferred to Universal Japan’s Capitol Records division. On February 24, 2026, the biography "Vivarium: Ado and Me" was published. The accompanying song, "Vivarium," was released on February 18. The music video, released on February 28, marked her first live-action video with several scenes where her face is mostly unobscured.
Ado’s influences include extensive exposure to Vocaloid music during her childhood. She has stated that Hatsune Miku is her biggest influence, saying in an interview with NME, "Vocaloid really is who I am. It’s all of me." In another interview, she named American rock band Kiss and British rock band Queen as significant early influences.
Ado’s musical style encompasses J-pop, rock, dance, and electronic genres. Her debut album, "Kyōgen," has been described as J-pop and rock with electro elements, and her debut single "Usseewa" was characterized as punk-influenced. Critics have noted her ability to move between genres, with songs that range from "punk vitriol to softly sung balladry," sometimes within the same track. On "Uta’s Songs: One Piece Film Red," Ado explored synth-pop with "New Genesis" and incorporated rapping in "Fleeting Lullaby."
Ado’s early career as an utaite placed her within a tradition of singers who gained fame online without revealing their faces. Many utaite, including Ado, use avatars or illustrations to represent themselves, emphasizing artistry over personal image. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, Ado stated that she avoids showing her face to keep the focus on her music and to remain connected to the Vocaloid and utaite scenes.
The blue rose is a symbol associated with Ado, representing "wishes coming true." This motif appears in her promotional materials and at live performances.
Ado is managed by Cloud Nine, an artist management company. She has worked with writers and producers such as Syudou, Surii, teniwoha, and Tsumiki, all of whom have backgrounds in the Vocaloid community.
Her first studio album, "Kyōgen," has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, with over 262,000 CD sales and more than 44,900 digital downloads. Her second album, "Zanmu," has been certified gold, with more than 100,000 CD sales. The soundtrack album "Uta's Songs: One Piece Film Red" sold over 317,000 CDs and 108,337 digital downloads, earning gold certification and charting in Belgium, France, and the United States.
The "Mirage" tour, held from December 2022 to January 2023, featured ten performances across six Japanese venues. The "Mars" tour, from June to September 2023, comprised fourteen shows in eleven locations. The "Wish" tour, announced in October 2023, ran from February to April 2024 and was her first world tour. The "Hibana World Tour" (April to August 2025) spanned 33 cities with over 500,000 attendees, making it the largest global tour by a Japanese artist at the time. The "Yodaka" dome tour, scheduled for major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, was announced for her fifth anniversary.
