Imagine buying a game, playing it for months, and then hearing you’ll need another account to keep playing—one that players in some places feared they couldn’t register. That was the question facing Helldivers 2 players in May 2024. Before the new requirement took effect, PlayStation canceled the scheduled update.
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by PlayStation Publishing. This fight centered on Steam players who had been playing without linking a PlayStation Network account, or PSN. After the account-linking announcement appeared on May 2, players in its discussion thread objected to creating another account, raised concerns about their data, and talked about changing their reviews.
Here’s the timeline. Account linking had been temporarily optional because of technical problems at launch, according to an FAQ shared in the game’s community. The planned requirement would begin for new Steam players on May 6. Existing players would start seeing a mandatory login on May 30 and would have until June 4 to link their accounts. But on May 6, PlayStation said the update would not move forward.
Why did this land so badly? Some players asked why they needed another login for a game they could already play. Others feared losing access altogether. The FAQ said PSN users must register in their country or territory of residence, but it did not clearly answer whether someone living where PSN was unavailable could keep playing. That made the proposed change more than an inconvenience for those players.
There was another side. The FAQ described account linking as a way to make reporting abuse, suspending players who grief others, and handling appeals more reliable. It also presented the change as the end of a temporary technical grace period, not a brand-new idea. That explanation didn’t erase the surprise for people who had been playing without a PSN link.
So where does it stand? PlayStation canceled the scheduled May 2024 rollout and said it was still learning what was best for PC players. There’s a qualification: the Steam store listing captured on October 3, 2026, still labels a PlayStation Network account as required. A store label alone does not tell us whether linking is enforced in-game, or settle the concern about access where PSN is unavailable. The unresolved question is whether players in those regions can continue playing without a PSN account.
