On May 8th, 2019, ProJared posted a blunt statement on Twitter: he and his wife, Heidi O’Ferrall, were getting a divorce. Within twenty-four hours, the gaming side of the internet was in chaos. Heidi replied publicly, not just announcing the split but accusing ProJared of infidelity with Holly Conrad and of soliciting explicit photos from fans—including, she claimed, minors. That single night, ProJared’s subscriber count plummeted by thousands, and the story exploded across every forum, tweet, and Discord server in the gaming community.
Let’s rewind to the beginning. Before May 2019, Jared Knabenbauer—known online as ProJared—had built a steady YouTube career through “One Minute Reviews” and Let’s Plays. His reputation in gaming circles was positive, and he’d been married to Heidi O’Ferrall, a professional cosplayer and artist, for several years. Behind the scenes, though, the relationship was fractured. There were rumors about their marriage, but nothing had ever broken into the public.
Holly Conrad, also known as Commander Holly, was another recognizable figure in this world. She was a YouTuber and cosplayer in her own right and was previously married to Ross O’Donovan of Game Grumps. Holly and Ross had already separated amicably before any of this came to light, but fans didn’t know the timeline until much later.
The events moved fast. On May 8th, ProJared’s divorce announcement seemed simple and unemotional. But the next day, May 9th, Heidi O’Ferrall posted a furious Twitter thread. She accused Jared of cheating on her with Holly Conrad, saying: “I recently learned that my husband @ProJared has been f***ing @HollyConrad behind my back for months.” This was the first time the public learned of any romantic involvement between ProJared and Holly Conrad.
Heidi’s thread did not stop with infidelity. In the same breath, she alleged that ProJared had been soliciting explicit photographs from fans, including some who were minors. Within hours, the allegations were circulating widely. By May 9th and 10th, multiple fans came forward on social media, some with screenshots, stating that ProJared had encouraged them to send explicit images. Some claimed they were underage at the time of the interactions.
ProJared had maintained a public Tumblr account dedicated to sharing explicit photographs. He described this space as body-positive and for consenting adults. Critics argued that a creator of his size soliciting nudes from fans blurred legal and ethical lines, especially with the new allegations of contact with minors.
All of this came as a shock to ProJared’s audience. On May 10th, just two days after the initial announcement, his subscriber count was dropping by thousands every hour. YouTube tracking sites charted one of the steepest real-time follower losses ever recorded for a gaming creator. Major gaming news outlets started running front-page stories, amplifying the scandal.
As the subscriber count crashed, discussions about consent and power dynamics in creator-fan relationships took over online spaces. Many questioned the ethics of influencers running explicit photo accounts—even those set up as body-positive communities. Some pointed to ProJared’s claim of a polyamorous agreement with Heidi as a complicating factor. According to ProJared, he and Heidi had allowed outside physical relationships, but Heidi’s statements suggested this agreement was fraught and not as mutual as Jared implied.
The turning point came in August, more than three months after the initial explosion. On August 27, 2019, ProJared uploaded a 42-minute video titled “You’ve Been Lied To.” This was his first major public response since the scandal broke. In the video, Jared outright denied soliciting nudes from minors, stating: “I did not solicit nudes from minors. I never have. That is a false allegation.” He presented what he described as evidence to refute the claims, including messages and timestamps meant to show that all his explicit exchanges were with consenting adults.
Jared’s video also addressed the polyamorous arrangement, arguing that he believed he and Heidi had a clear agreement allowing outside relationships. He said that the conflict only arose when emotions changed and boundaries weren’t respected. He characterized his Tumblr as a body-positive project and denied any intention to exploit or harm fans.
Heidi O’Ferrall stood by her original statements. Fans and commentators debated the evidence Jared presented. Some argued his explanations were convincing, citing the receipts and his timeline. Others said the power imbalance between a creator and their fans meant the interactions were inappropriate regardless of legality.
The controversy spread for several reasons. First, the original allegations touched on multiple hot-button issues—infidelity, consent, exploitation, and the vulnerability of fans in parasocial relationships. Second, all three main figures—ProJared, Heidi O’Ferrall, and Holly Conrad—were already well-known in overlapping online communities. Their personal lives had been intertwined with other creators, like the Game Grumps team, which pulled even more attention. Screenshots, alleged text messages, and emotionally charged statements drove the story on Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube.
Every major development was amplified by the personalities involved. Holly Conrad made her own response, saying, “If you want to believe a hyperbolic statement from someone you don’t know on the Internet with no previous background information and use it to demonize strangers, so be it.” This only intensified the debate, as fans dissected the language, the implications, and the subtext of every post and video.
Even as the dust settled, the community remained divided. ProJared’s subscriber numbers partially recovered but never returned to their pre-scandal peak. Some fans accepted his explanations. Others continued to pull apart the evidence, comparing timelines and statements. The scandal became a cautionary tale about boundaries and transparency for creators with large, invested audiences.
To this day, people still debate the nature of ProJared’s Tumblr account—was it a genuine, positive space for adult fans, or an inappropriate blurring of public and private boundaries given the power dynamic? Others argue about the ethics of creators engaging with fans in intimate contexts, no matter how clear the consent. And one of the most frequently debated points is whether ProJared’s video successfully cleared him of the most serious allegations or simply muddied the narrative even further.
